Ramblings of a sleep deprived mind..Project Thomso

So, for a while i was toiling with the idea of actively conducting a marketing/financial survey. But the target customers and the prospective results was somewhat not clicking together. So, why the hell I am writing this post, you ask me! Sorry, to get all "The reluctant fundamentalist" way of writing, but it sounded like fun.

So, here comes Thomso in the picture. Thomso, the annual fest of IIT Roorkee which hosts a mind blowing event every year, witnessing participants from around the country and some foreigners too. The estimation ranges to more than 10k students both from IIT and other colleges coming in to Roorkee. So, what am I reaching at, you ask me? Wait and be patient, you will know it all. So, as I was saying, this fest provides lot of dough to circulate within the campus and the city. And to learn the significance of this money could give an insight to what people consume.

This was the easy part. The hard part was to see how this data can be collected and more importantly used, once it is collected. I decided to concentrate on the first part. My first instinct told me to create a map of campus and jot down the basic distribution channels around the campus and inside the campus. And that way I co1uld show, as we move away from the campus, the money circulation decreases maybe exponentially. But then again, I am moving too fast. Lets start from the beginning.

The idea was clear, but the execution still required support and mentorship. I went to seniors to seniors, but all was in vain. Finally I decided to Google, and in hope to recover something good, read almost 50 articles on how to conduct a successful marketing survey, all bullshit. Since, every practical application starts with the theory work, next I started writing my goals and objectives, as to where I am going with this shit. And the shit worked, gave me an insight to where I should focus. Am I ever coming to the point, you ask me? Wait I am almost there.

Then again I was wrong, I decided to survey all the shopkeepers and distribution channels. But, the naive me didn't know, it was not possible since nobody gives a shit to your survey. And will not provide their books to you. Even an estimate worth is not provided.

So, starting from the basics, I went to professors to find out the correct way, and the correct way was to survey the consumers, since the objective was to determine the consumption pattern of consumers and not the other way round.

Now, the question was how to design a questionnaire worthy of such an effect, that people give me their data instantly. I worked for it in different ways. For the first two days, I met with as many people as I could (Thomso is a 3 day fest), and asked about how they are spending money. What was the perceived budget, and how much did they spend it? And so and so.. And the last day, I came out with all the questions,I could muster. Finally I printed several sheets and conducted a fabulous survey. (Around 100 sheets in 5 hours)

You ask me the result? Well, the result is that I still need some more data before I could predict something, You can say, the work is in progress. But the amount of exposure I got was over-whelming. The meeting of new people, making friends and listening to their stories gave me such a satisfaction that anybody gets at the end of the day of successful hard work. How I can leverage this data, is yet to be seen. I will be providing all the details. So stay tuned for more updates. This is Project Thomso.. xoxo...
